Today let’s meet one of our summer interns, Isabella Bernardi. She is a graduate student earning her master’s in civil and environmental engineering at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth.

Parna: What do you want to be when you grow up and why?
Isabella: I aspire to be a coastal structural and geotechnical engineer, specializing in the interactions between structure and soil. This will allow me to always be able to do my job near the ocean, and because I am passionate about how waves and water affect structures and soil.

Parna: How was your internship experience and what did you gain from it?
Isabella: I have learned valuable skills in artificial intelligence (AI), including obtaining a deeper understanding of machine learning. These are very useful skills that can also be applied to my major of civil engineering — an industry that is developing a greater need for AI. I look forward to the stand-up meetings every day because the people I work with are amazing.

Parna: What’s the one piece of advice you’d offer to future interns?
Isabella: You have the opportunity to learn something new every day—always take that opportunity, even when something may not be of interest to you.

Parna: If Gracie were a hardware product, how would you describe it?
Isabella: Automated language processor.
